Located in the heart of Cambridge, Fitzwilliam College is currently undertaking a major renovation of its central accommodation buildings. The project, delivered by contractor SEH French, involves upgrading the historic MNOP staircases to create 80 modern ensuite rooms and new communal spaces. A key goal of this renovation is to decarbonise the estate and significantly reduce future energy usage. To ensure safe and durable access to the roof of the upgraded building, the project team chose Gorter, the market leader in roof hatches. For this project, one RHT roof hatch combined with fixed stairs was supplied.

Sustainable design and excellent insulation

With the college's strong focus on decarbonisation, every building material must meet high energy-efficiency standards. That is why the best roof hatch starts with Gorter. The installed RHT roof hatch features a fully thermally broken curb and cover. This smart design provides an exceptionally high insulation value and prevents condensation, which perfectly supports the college's mission to minimise heat loss and reduce energy consumption.

Permanent and safe roof access

When regular roof access is required for maintenance or inspections, a fixed staircase is the ideal solution. The Gorter roof hatch paired with a fixed stair provides maintenance personnel with a permanent, robust, and highly secure route to the roof. Furthermore, the entire combination is TÜV NORD certified and features a CE marking, ensuring the highest safety standards for all users.
